Or something, yeah. Bear with me here a minute.

I want you to remember a time when you were reduced to a single aspect of who you are. Maybe you were reduced to what clique you belonged to in school, part of your body, your beliefs, your habits, etc. Now imagine that society insisted on defining you by that one aspect, while disregarding the rest of you, with degrading words. I bet that really upset you and you probably internalized their reactions, at least a little. 

Luckily, you probably belonged to a group that was united by that aspect and they were happy to offer advice with how to deal with people like that and reaffirm your identity beyond that aspect alone. 

Now I want you to imagine that you didn’t have that group. Instead, everyone who shared that aspect was told by society that they should be ashamed of that part of themselves. Some disregard what society says and are degraded even further by society while others conform and degrade people like you in order to prove their loyalty to societal norms (often to avoid further degradation themselves). Now you’re not only reduced to one aspect and denied your identity but you’re also being told that you’re wrong and unwanted by the same people who should be most understanding and supportive.
